Of Human Interest: The lighter side of the news

REASONS TO CELEBRATE THIS WEEKEND:

FRIDAY: Veterans Day, though not until tomorrow, is observed today as a federal holiday.

This is Lung Cancer Awareness Day.

And the U.S. Marine Corps was established on this date in 1775.

SATURDAY: This is Veterans Day, honoring all military veterans and commemorating the signing of the armistice that ended World War I on this date in 1918. It is known as Remembrance Day in Canada.

Today is also Death/Duty Day, honoring all soldiers who died on Nov. 11, 1918, the day the armistice ending World War I took effect.

It's Vox Populi Day, a day to make your voice and opinions count. Vox Populi is Latin for "people's voice."

This is Martimas or the Feast Day of St. Martin of Tours, one of the most popular saints of the Middle Ages. Sweden celebrates it as St. Martin's Day.

Today is Independence Day in Angola and in Poland.

This is Concordia Day in the French West Indies.

And according to the Hindu solar calendar, today is the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism.

SUNDAY: Today through next Saturday is American Education Week, by presidential proclamation.

This is also National Geographic Awareness Week, and Operating Room Nurse Week.

Members of the Baha'i faith celebrate the anniversary of the birth, in 1817, of Baha'u'llah, the prophet-founder of the Baha'i faith, today.

And Tunisia's national agricultural festival, the Tree Festival, is today.

MONDAY: Today through next Sunday is National Children's Book Week.

And this is World Kindness Day.
