Funeral of leader of Bahai faith

The funeral has taken place in Israel of the last surviving member of the holy family of the Bahai faith.

Madame Ruhiyyah Rabbani died in Haifa on Wednesday, at the age of ninety.

Born in North America, she was the widow of Shoghi Effendi Rabbani -- whose great-grandfather founded the religion in nineteenth-century Persia.

The BBC Religious Affairs correspondent says Madame Rabbani played an important role in developing the Bahai faith, travelling widely and seeing it expand to some six-million adherents in one hundred and ninety countries. Bahai is an amalgam of major faiths that incorporates Muslim, Christian and Jewish theologies -- among others.
