PRAYERS for peace were said at the launch of Huddersfield's Interfaith Council last night.

About 200 people from six major faiths joined in a plea for community harmony and understanding, at the Methodist Mission in Lord Street, Huddersfield.

Those present included Nancy Solomons, of the Jewish faith, Dr Nasim Hasnie, of the Muslim faith, David Jackson, of the Christian faith, Patsy Jenkins, of the Baha'i faith, the Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Margaret Bates, Inderpal Singh Randhawa, of the Sikh faith, Kiran Bali, of the Hindu faith, and the next Bishop of Pontefract, currently Archdeacon of Pontefract, the Ven Tony Robinson.

Presentations were given by representatives of each faith and Mr Robinson and the Mayor spoke about their hopes for the council.

The Christian chairman of the council, the Rev Mel Garside, said the evening had been superb.

The idea was to allow all faith communities to speak with one voice.

Sikh Inderpal Singh Randhawa said: "Everybody is equal no matter what colour, creed, religion or caste."

Hindu Sila Jathwa, who attended the launch with her husband and three sons, said: "It was beautiful. It brought all the people together."

The council will now meet monthly at each religion's place of worship.
